About Ahlulbayt Poetry

Our Vision

Established in 2021, Ahlulbayt Poetry was founded to share the wisdom of the Ahlulbayt (a.s.) with English readers through the great historical poems composed in their honor — and, on occasion, by them. Imam Ali (a.s.), Imam Husayn (a.s.), Lady Zaynab (a.s.) and others left verses of supplication, counsel, and longing that have shaped Muslim devotion for fourteen centuries; alongside them stand the elegies of Karbala, the praises of the Prophet (s.a.w.) and his family, and the answering songs of every poet who came after.

What Makes This Different

Translating poetry is not the same as translating prose. A poem’s life lives not only in its words but in its music — the rise and fall of its meter, the chime of its rhymes, the silence between its lines. Most translations of Arabic devotional poetry choose meaning over music, and leave the reader with the bones of the poem but none of its breath.

Our translations work the other way. Each poem is rendered into English verse that follows real poetic form — preserving meter, rhyme, and rhythm wherever the Arabic does — so the English reads as a poem, not as a footnote. Where the Arabic chimes, the English chimes; where the Arabic mourns, the English mourns in the cadence proper to it. The original is preserved beside the translation, line for line, so the reader can move between the two and hear the same voice in two tongues.

The Poems

Our anthology gathers elegies, supplications, panegyrics, and verses of the Ahlulbayt themselves. Each entry is introduced briefly so the reader can step into the poem with some sense of the world that produced it — its author, its era, the grief or love or hope that gave it shape.
